What is a fact family?

Maths phrases are often strange and mysterious for parents to work with at home. I am often asked to explain the phrase, “Fact family.”

A fact family is all the addition and subtraction facts – OR multiplication and division facts which can be associated with a particular set of numbers.

E.g

3+4=7

4+3=7

7-3=4

7-4=3

This can work for multiplying and dividing too.

7x3=21

3x7=21

21÷3=7

21÷7=3

AND

21=7x3

21=3x7

3=21÷7

7=21÷3

A fact family is just the set of numbers, and all the things that you can do with them.
